Welcome to Newbury Academy (2001-2009, now closed)
2009 brings the closing of Newbury Academy. It has been an honor and pleasure working with our students who have all graduated and gone on to very promising futures. We wish you all the best!
The website will remain active in case it inspires others to develop their own alternative education to meet students' needs. From 2001-2008, Newbury Academy had a physical location in Dumont, NJ, and from September 2008, it served as a virtual school, with all classes conducted online and teachers making weekly home visits. See "About Us" for more information. You can also read more about us on Families.com.
Although we can't promise a speedy reply, we can still be contacted by completing the enquiry form on the "Contact Us" page.
The Newbury Academy difference
Newbury Academy's virtual year (2008-2009) offered REAL TIME classes on a full time schedule. That means students signed in online with their teachers every school day at 9am, and signed off at 3pm (with a break for lunch, of course!). The courses they took were prescribed by the New Jersey State Core Curriculum, so Newbury Academy students took the same courses and spent the same amount of time on them as any other student in the state. The only difference - it was all done from the student's own home. Teachers made weekly visits to the students' homes as arranged by the parents, students and school.
For students without district support, tuition was offered at less than a third of other private schools in northern New Jersey. See "Admissions" for more information.
100% of our graduates have gone on to attend the college of their choice! In 2009, at the close of our final year, we congratulated our graduates as well as our alumnae who graduated from Rutgers University.
